The Estate and Tax Paralegal performs a variety of duties to assist attorneys according to established policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and file probate-related documentation and reports with the Clerk of Superior Court (e.g., Application for Probate, Inventory for Decedent’s Estate, Annual/Final Account).
- Gather information regarding estate assets and debts by consulting with client, banks, brokerage firms, accountants, and other attorneys.
- Compile data from checking accounts, financial statements, and brokerage statements in comprehensive fiduciary accountings.
- Maintain positive communications with clients.
- Prepare and file federal estate tax returns (Form 706).
- Prepare and file state and federal fiduciary income tax returns for trusts and estates.
- Prepare and file federal gift tax returns (Form 709).
- Prepare estate planning documents using document assembly software.
- Arrange for the execution of documents and the signing of tax returns.
- Work with docketing coordinator to ensure due dates of tax returns and accountings are determined and docketed and manage projects to meet such deadlines.
- Operate software programs to value securities and complete tax returns and reports, including EstateVal, VISIO and ZANE.
- Observe confidentiality of client matters.
- Organize and maintain paper and electronic files regarding estate plans, estate administration and related matters.
- Take a proactive approach to solve problems and provide solutions to shareholders and clients.
- Perform all other incidental duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A minimum of two years of paralegal experience working in a legal department or law firm/professional services environment, with a strong preference given to candidates with estate and tax experience.
- Bachelor’s degree, or ABA approved paralegal certification required.
- Overall knowledge of rules and procedures; understanding of tax preparation software; familiarity with court structure.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe and specialized document management and preparation software.
- A highly professional demeanor and demonstrated work ethic including the willingness to take on extra tasks and responsibilities.
- Ability to work outside of normal hours when client needs require.
- Ability to take ownership of assigned clients and matters.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to meet the client-service standards of the firm with both internal and external clients.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to convey messaging clearly for the intended audience.
- The ability to prioritize multiple competing priorities and travel outside the office for client needs may be required occasionally.

Compensation: $65,000.00-$95,000.00, plus overtime and bonus. DOE.
