Manager of Career Development & Advancement

The Talent Department of a prestigious law firm has an opening for a Manager of Career Development & Advancement in the New York office.  The Manager of Career Development & Advancement provides strategic career guidance to firm attorneys and attorney alumni, creates career development resources and programs, maintains relationships with firm attorney alumni and clients, works on initiatives of the Chief Legal Talent Officer, and collaborates with colleagues in Talent, Diversity & Inclusion, Human Resources, Practice Management, and Well-Being to enhance the attorney experience at the firm. This position will be based in the NY Office to support those attorneys, work as part of a larger Career Development & Advancement team and will support attorneys in the New Jersey office and on occasion other offices.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing individual career development and advancement guidance and coaching to attorneys on the following primary topics: firm integration; navigation of firm procedures and resources; performance coaching; and short- and long-term career planning (including development of personal career goals, path to promotion, and external job searches).
  • Tracking and analyzing attorney trends and statistics to evaluate the career development and advancement program and other talent initiatives, develop measurements of success, enhance the associate experience, and increase associate retention.
  • Writing, editing, and compiling resources and newsletters to promote strategic career development and advancement of attorneys, including regular updates for firm committees and practice groups.
  • Developing programming related to career development and advancement for firm attorneys and attorney alumni, including on-demand video programs and programs related to career advancement, diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, professional development training, associate and partner mentoring, and specific practice group or office needs.
  • Establishing, tracking, and maintaining relationships with firm attorney alumni and working collaboratively with Attorney Alumni Relations on alumni-related initiatives; including providing programming, individual career development and advancement guidance, and coaching when requested.
  • Developing relationships with firm partners and counsel to facilitate attorney career development, secondments, and placement initiatives with clients and firm contacts.
  • Collaborating with NY Office leadership to assist with office-specific attorney integration and engagement efforts.
  • Maintaining career development resources page on the firm’s intranet.

Qualifications:

  • D. or other advanced degree related to career coaching or counseling required.
  • Experience counseling lawyers or law students on career development and advancement opportunities required.
  • Experience with project management and program creation and implementation required.
  • Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives as they relate to attorney career development and advancement preferred.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • Strong proficiency in database programs, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Excel, and Smartsheet.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to develop strong relationships and trust, communication and organizational skills, strong judgement, and ability to maintain confidentiality required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required. Public speaking skills preferred.
  • Understanding of the legal profession and legal hiring trends and practices is required. This includes familiarity with career opportunities for lawyers within legal and non-legal environments, including federal and state governments, in-house corporate legal departments, non-profit/public interest organizations, and large and small law firms.
  • An ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, including being a “team player” within the Talent Department.
  • Ability to interact smoothly with high-level professionals necessary.
  • Database management skills helpful.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $165,000 to $200,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
