Summary

This position will sit in the firm’s Roseland, NJ or New York, NY office and currently offers a hybrid work opportunity. As a member of the management team, the Director of Human Resources manages the segment of the department responsible for overseeing the recruitment, retention, and training of all non-attorneys (a/k/a/ Business Services Group personnel) as well as HR compliance and Benefits/Wellness.

Essential Job Requirements

Recruiting, Onboarding and Retention
Work closely with our recruiting team and BSG management in the recruitment of BSG team members in determining appropriate responsibilities, reporting structure and compensation ranges (from entry-level to CXO positions). Address escalated issues with background checks. Work with our HR Compliance Manager to oversee orientation process, including ensuring that all documentation has been completed/entered correctly (i.e., I-9s, payroll, etc.). Oversee the BSG evaluation process which includes analysis of compensation structure using salary surveys for internal and external equitability, reviewing performance evaluations, making recommendations to managers regarding language and compensation, assisting in monitoring evaluation process and verifying that evaluations have been completed by all employees and compensation has been entered correctly and in a timely fashion. Conduct quarterly employee WOW recognition program, including soliciting nominations, conducting WOW committee meetings, and conveying decisions to appropriate individuals.

Benefits
Work with our Senior Manager of Benefits and Wellness in establishing open enrollment process annually and work on day-to-day escalated benefit issues regarding enrollments, terminations, invoicing, family leave, claims processing and worker’s compensation. Work with brokers annually to identify a comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, flexible spending, disability policies, employee assistance programs, etc.) appropriate for our culture and negotiate rates effectively. Along with our Senior Manager of Benefits and Wellness and our Payroll Manager, implement and enforce all applicable healthcare regulations and other legal requirements by appropriate deadlines.

Employee Relations and Compensation
Build relationships with all BSG from their introduction to the firm. Handle BSG employee relations issues firmwide. Work with employees and management daily to determine and implement appropriate resolutions. Draft performance improvement plans and provide one-on-one coaching as necessary. Responsible for investigating all discrimination, harassment and ethical complaints and work with firm leadership, as necessary, to identify and implement resolutions. Conduct engagement interviews and facilitate the delivery of engagement survey data to extrapolate overall themes and individual issues to be addressed. Work with leadership to address. Conduct exit interviews and work with management to address areas identified. Oversee the base and bonus compensation process for business services group employees.

Training and Development
Develop and deliver various training classes (e.g., Ethics, Workplace Conduct/Anti-Harassment training, Recruiting, Performance Management, etc.). Work with our Professional Development team to determine appropriate BSG training and facilitate the use of external coaches, when necessary. Perform one-on-one coaching with employees and/or management in dealing with personal or professional challenges or identify external training opportunities as needed. Oversee the administration of the online Workplace Conduct (Anti-harassment and Discrimination) training program annually.

Policies, Procedures, Compliance and Communication
Develop, recommend, and implement firm-wide policies and ensure compliance with state (NJ, NY, CA, DC and UT)/federal requirements as well as HR-specific policies (e.g., record retention, HIPAA, etc.). Work with HR Compliance Manager to oversee revisions to and distribution of handbook annually. Create and maintain annual budget of approximately $12 million (e.g., invoice approval, budget forecasts, etc.). Work with Professional Development to create and update the content for an HR Intranet page, a resource tool for locating information related to benefits, on-boarding, policies, etc. Work closely with HR Compliance manager to manage all claims for unemployment, as well as the preparation of all reports required legally (EEO, Certificate of Employer Information, OSHA, ACA-related forms, etc.). Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements. Analyze statistical data (recruiting sources, benefits claims, etc.). Make recommendations about keeping/revising/eliminating various tools or programs that may or may not be successful. Provide guidance and oversight to the Committee responsible for the firm’s internal monthly newsletter.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • A minimum of five years of HR management experience, in a law firm and/or financial services company is required.
  • Experience in federal employment and benefits laws, as well as state-specific laws (California, New Jersey, New York, DC, Utah).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the firm and vendors.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate with all levels.
  • The ability to manage a diverse group with competing responsibilities.
  • The demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build programs and activities, along with a talent for influencing others to contribute.
  • Demonstrated strong writing, planning, problem solving and organizational skills.

  • PHR or SPHR preferred.

Amount of Travel Required:  20%

Compensation

For candidates meeting the requirements, the expected base salary is $225,000 to $275,000. The range provided is the salary that the Firm in good faith believes at the time of this posting that it is willing to pay for the advertised position. Exact compensation will be determined based on individual candidate qualifications and location. Our benefits package includes coverage options for medical, dental, vision, prescription drug, life insurance, disability, FSAs, 401K, and paid time off.
