Summary
The Senior Corporate Talent and Staffing Manager is responsible for overseeing a broad range of talent and staffing initiatives for the Corporate practice area in the New York Office. This includes engaging practice group leaders in developing the firm’s attorneys to their highest potential, partnering with the Diversity & Inclusion Team to ensure senior leadership accountability for a diverse talent pipeline, working with Attorney Development Managers and fellow staffers to staff attorneys and manage their workloads, overseeing a robust performance review process, participating in strategic workforce planning, partnering with other Talent teams and practice development as well as participating in certain practice group administrative needs.
Responsibilities
Talent:
- Develop a professional relationship with senior lawyers and associates, including an in-depth understanding of professional aspirations, experiences, strengths, development needs and relevant personal circumstances.
- Partner with practice group leaders to ensure attorneys are receiving clear and actionable feedback as well as going forward strategies to achieve their goals prior to the next formal review period.
- Collaborate with practice group leaders and various committees to plan for future workforce needs, capacity projections and target planning.
- Partner with Attorney Development Managers in assigned practice groups to implement individualized development plans through staffing, mentoring, training and other development initiatives.
- Ensure that the professional development needs of diverse attorneys, women and those on reduced schedules are being addressed.
Staffing:
- Interface with partners and associates, respond to and clarify staffing requests from senior lawyers; conducts outreach to associates regarding, capacity, interest, and overall workflow.
- Attend Corporate Practice group and subgroup meetings to understand the business and staffing needs of the practice areas.
- Ensure that each attorney is fully utilized within their area, having the opportunity to work on a variety of matters and with a variety of partners, while balancing development opportunities with client needs.
- Ensure consistency of experiences and equitable distribution of assignments across the practice area and intervene as appropriate.
- Cull and synthesize information for practice leader, including missing time, status of reviews and distribution of workload.
- Track, aggregate and analyze attorney metrics including availability information and utilization rates.
General:
- Liaise with the Attorney Development team, partners and various committees.
- Serve as an associate resource regarding their workflow capacity and development plans.
- Synthesize data related to the Corporate Practice groups, including tracking staffing assignments, deal flow and transaction status, across multiple databases.
- Extensive reporting, analysis and presentation of data to be utilized for presentation to practice group leaders.
- Provide value-added context and “color” for practice group leaders so that decision-making and forward motion are less time-consuming.
- Spearhead innovation with respect to the maintenance and utilization of associate data in order to promote associate development.
- Stay apprised of developments in other practice groups and across the firm in order to distill what may be important/useful to the practice group leaders.
- Oversee Corporate Talent and Staffing team.
- General ad hoc projects as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s required. Juris Doctorate degree preferred.
- At least 8-10 years of relevant law firm experience with significant experience in the corporate practice areas.
- Experience influencing and working closely with executive level leaders.
- Ability to develop effective partnerships across disparate groups to organize and facilitate decisions and ensure implementation as well as address complex issues.
- Sound judgment and ability to respect, protect and maintain highly confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to work strategically and collaboratively, while grasping larger concepts as well as minor details.
- Impeccable managerial, organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Exceptional written, presentation and verbal communication skills.
- Reasonable level of financial literacy and numeracy, and comfort analyzing data/metrics
- Ability to toggle between, and establish priorities among, competing work streams and deliver results with a sense of urgency and on deadline.
- Advanced proficiency of Microsoft Office Suite, knowledge of viDesktop is a plus.
- Professional and positive demeanor; positive, solution oriented, self-starter.
- Flexibility to work outside regular business hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.
