Job Description
Provide legal expertise and guidance to attorneys on litigation docketing, court rules and procedures as they relate to court functions and calendaring. Responsible for legal analysis with respect to complex procedural issues, review filings for form and procedural content, advise Litigation Departments on court rules, civil procedure, filing, and deadline calculation. Work with team to review, approve, serve and transmit filings.
Primary Responsibilities and/or Essential Functions
- Docket all matters using CompuLaw or an equivalent database (e.g., Court Alert or eDockets).
- Actively monitor case statuses through manual and electronic means, ensuring the timely retrieval of decisions, orders and docket updates for delivery to attorneys.
- Work closely with the Managing Attorney to coordinate firm-wide calendaring and notification functions.
- Handle electronic filing in federal and state courts, requiring a familiarity with all filing rules, procedures and judge’s individual practices.
- Liaise with court personnel.
- Respond to all attorney procedural inquiries and, as necessary, conduct legal research on those issues.
- Collaborate and strategize with attorneys to solve complex procedural questions.
- Perform research on courts and judges upon request.
- Keep current on industry standards by utilizing resources including NYLJ, e-Law and New York Case Tracking databases.
- Assist the Managing Attorney in developing firm-wide training programs on docketing and notification skills.
- Train litigation attorneys and paralegals on docketing and notification skills.
- Assist the Managing Attorney in creating litigation templates and filing checklists for attorneys.
- Assist the Managing Attorney in managing vendor relationships necessary for cost-effective performance in this area.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proficient in searching and retrieving information from court-related databases (e.g. Courtlink, PACER, eLaw, CourtAlert) and other on-line sources of case information.
- Possess excellent customer service, communication and organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of Compulaw or equivalent (Court Alert, eDockets) highly preferable.
- Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, Bloomberg Law and other research platforms.
- Law firm or Law Clerk in State and/or Federal court experience is preferred.
Education/Certifications
- JD and 5+ years of relevant experience in a large law firm or judicial setting equivalent.
