Attorney Recruiting Manager

Location: New York City or Washington, D.C.

Summary

This position is responsible for managing lateral attorney recruitment for the New York City and Washington, D.C. offices. We are looking for an enthusiastic East Coast recruiting leader to join our Attorney Recruiting team. The ideal candidate has a professional demeanor and provides an excellent first impression of the Firm.  They are passionate about people and relationships, service focused, resilient, adaptable, highly collaborative, think strategically, and a natural at connecting the dots.  This position will support the Senior Manager, Attorney Recruiting Initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Senior Manager, Attorney Recruiting Initiatives to accomplish year-round attorney hiring, including partner, counsel and associate recruitment, for the New York City and Washington, D.C. offices. Work with leadership, including Department Heads, Practice Group Leaders, and Office Partners-in-Charge to identify hiring needs and advance recruiting objectives in a strategic manner.
  • Guide lateral candidates through the recruiting process to ensure their experience is representative of the Firm’s standards of excellence.
  • Frequently collaborate with the Diversity Outreach Recruitment Manager to develop methods to attract diverse attorney candidates and advance the firm’s diversity recruiting efforts.
  • Partner closely with key colleagues, including Professional Development, Practice Management and Office Administrators, to exercise timely sharing of information and recruiting best practices. Drive process improvements to ensure optimal productivity.
  • Advise and manage open attorney position announcements.
  • Develop and drive innovative sourcing methods to build proactive talent pipelines
  • Proactively create a sourcing plan for open positions, including the identification and management of external sources for those open positions. Strategically distribute open position announcements utilizing external sources.
  • Develop, identify, and track internal and external referrals for open positions using a variety of sourcing tools.
  • Work with Practice Group Chairs and Partners-in-Charge to develop prospective candidate profiles. Coordinate resources to identify candidates who match the profile and determine method of contact and relevant follow-up.
  • Review resumes and prescreen lateral attorney applications for employment; ensure appropriate correspondence produced and required records maintained.
  • Effectively manage contact with candidates, including discussion of recruitment process. Work with Recruiting Assistant to arrange interviews.
  • Manage formal due diligence and offer process for lateral hires. Draft offer letters and compensation packages. Prepare lateral hire packets for partner candidates presented to the Executive Committee and Partnership.
  • Communicate hiring developments to leaders on a regular basis.
  • Team closely with the Professional Development and Practice Management Departments at key points throughout the recruitment process and to ensure newly hired attorneys experience a seamless transition and early integration into the firm
  • Consistently track key metrics and generate relevant reports. Report competitive market intelligence on hiring statistics. Develop and analyze reports and projections regarding market trends in diversity, legal recruiting, and retention.
  • Assist with annual budget process.
  • Provide backup to other recruiting team members as needed, including interview scheduling.
  • Perform other related projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required. JD preferred.
  • 4+ years’ work experience as a legal recruiter working directly in the New York or Washington, D.C. metro areas and legal markets required, preferably in a law firm or other professional services environment. Demonstrated knowledge of current law firm industry trends in those markets required. Strong relationships and connections in those legal markets required.
  • Requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain effective working relationships and communicate verbally and in writing in a professional, courteous manner with lawyers, firm members, professional staff and other business contacts.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive with the ability to think strategically and execute against the agreed recruitment strategy
  • Ability to anticipate issues and diplomatically drive initiatives to achieve results.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and be highly organized and accurate required.
  • Exceptional ability to prioritize and manage projects, work under pressure, and meet deadlines in a timely organized manner.
  • Public relations skills and ability to represent the firm in a professional manner.
  • Sound judgment and creative problem solving skills. Ability to respect, protect and maintain highly confidential and sensitive information.

  • Experience synthesizing and analyzing data.
  • Demonstrated writing ability and excellent grammar, spelling and proofreading skills are required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Products required, i.e. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel. Working knowledge of recruiting software, preferably viRecruit.
