Knowledge Management Attorney-Compensation, Governance & Advisory

The Knowledge Management Attorney (“KM Attorney”) will be an experienced lawyer who will help to develop, implement and maintain the Knowledge Strategy for the Compensation, Governance and Advisory Group (the “Group”). The KM Attorney will draft client memoranda and articles, manage the annual corporate governance survey; create, develop and manage the Group’s collection of forms, precedents and research materials (including content analysis); track and analyze changes in existing applicable laws and regulations and the development of new laws and regulations and other relevant information; communicate this information to the Group in an easily digestible format; provide legal and practical expertise to support the Group’s practice; collaborate with the Professional Development team to organize, design and/or deliver training to the Group’s lawyers and legal assistants; monitor developments in the legal and business environment with a view to increasing market share and spotting business opportunities; work with Business Development resources to identify opportunities to develop business from new and existing clients; and perform other duties as required by the Group.  This position reports directly to the Practice Group Leader (“PGL”), and will closely liaise with the firm’s Technology, Business Development, Marketing and Knowledge Management departments.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Knowledge Strategy

  • Work with the Group and the firm’s Knowledge Management department to assess the relevant knowledge needs, define and implement a plan to meet those needs, and establish mechanisms for regular review of the plan.
  • Capture feedback for continuous improvement of KM products and processes.
  • Monitor the marketplace for new and innovative KM and research tools.

Corporate Governance Survey

  • Quarterback the Group’s contributions to the Firm’s annual corporate governance survey—including topic development, review of associates’ research, managing results data base and developing measurement metrics.
  • Work with Events and Marketing to organize related corporate governance symposium.
  • Assist the partners in speaking and publishing regularly on corporate governance topics.

Current Awareness and Thought Leadership

  • Monitor and keep the Practice Group informed about important developments in applicable statutes, regulations, judicial decisions and the business environment through bulletins, training, know-how meetings and other processes.
  • Spearhead regular thought leadership efforts and regular external publications.
  • Participate in industry events to raise the Firm’s profile as a thought leader and keep up to date with developments when feasible.

Organizing and Sharing Knowledge

  • Work with members from the Group to create and capture practice-related knowledge content and encourage the sharing of information and knowledge generally.
  • Work with the KM team to implement procedures for capturing, filtering, storing, analyzing, accessing and disseminating materials and information, including model forms and precedents.
  • Co-ordinate and support the lawyers to ensure that all models and forms are updated as needed to reflect changes in applicable laws, regulations, market standards and best practices; and ensure seamless accessibility of information and precedents via the appropriate practice portals.
  • Undertake related ad hoc research for lawyers as requested.
  • Co-ordinate with KM attorneys across the firm to share ideas and identify projects or thought leadership opportunities that would benefit from a multi-group collaboration.

Lawyer Training and Technical Expertise

  • Identify practice-related training needs and coordinate with the Professional Development team to organize, design and deliver (personally or with others) training, including seminars, workshops and offsite training.
  • Train on how to access knowledge resources in the practice portals, on the Firm Intranet and elsewhere.
  • Train lawyers on use of knowledge-based and efficiency tools introduced in the practice.
  • Provide direct support to individual practitioners to assist them with locating practice-related internal and external knowledge resources.
  • Be a source of legal, market and practical expertise.
  • Follow CLE offered in and out of the Firm and drive participation. 

Client-Facing Initiatives and Business Development

  • Assist the Business Development resources to identify opportunities to develop business from new and existing clients through current events and developments in the area, articles, briefing notes, client training, etc. as requested.
  • Help to develop innovative ideas for using content to identify market trends and use the information as a business development tool.
  • Help to identify issues and developments of relevance to key clients as part of ongoing business development as requested.
  • Preparing client memoranda and presentations on new developments.
  • Assist in preparing pitch materials; maintain BD opportunity database.

Skills and Experience

  • Five or more years of sound legal experience at a large law firm or relevant in-house legal department; preferably in executive compensation or corporate governance matters.
  • High professional standards with a passion for quality work product.
  • Excellent prose writing, drafting and research skills.
  • Familiarity with PowerPoint and a willingness to be creative in preparing presentations and pitch materials.
  • Pragmatic, self-motivated, flexible and team oriented attitude.
  • Well-developed organizational and communication skills.
  • Prior experience providing knowledge management support highly desirable.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with people at all levels.
  • Aptitude for and interest in the Group’s area of law, as well as technology and integration issues.
