Essential Duties & Responsibilities

This position supports the business development activities of the practice area or office.  The BD Program Manager will work closely with the Director to ensure that the group or office’s business development initiatives coordinate with overall firm strategy. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Seek to understand firm, practice and office goals and work with Practice Group Leaders (PGL’s) to design and implement group/office BD goals, objectives and strategies
  • Create and edit/and or publish the following:  Responses to RFPs, customized pitches and business development presentations. Web and print marketing collateral, including brochures, practice descriptions, biographies. Client alerts, newsletters and articles authored by attorneys. Directory submissions and industry award applications
  • Conduct research on existing and prospective clients, competitor activity, and industry or market trends to develop best practices and aid in the development of BD plans, presentations and proposals. Understand and apply sophisticated marketing/BD strategy and current legal industry trends. Show vision
  • Support key clients by identifying cross-selling opportunities and facilitating multi-disciplinary cooperation among colleagues.
  • Liaise with the firm’s communications team and practice group leaders on media relations and communications activities relevant to the business development initiatives associated with the practice area or office
  • Work with practice group leaders and the firm’s recruiting department to integrate lateral partners. Assist attorneys in developing personal business development plans
  • Collect and analyze relevant data.  Apply sound judgment in decision-making to act upon data and deliver strategic results
  • Manage deals lists and experience database
  • Work with Events Manager to execute practice seminars, CLE presentations, webinars and other client-facing events
  • Read industry publications to remain aware of trends that may impact the firm’s practice/industry and apply that knowledge to identify opportunities for promoting the practice/industry
  • Provide support to practice group members on other strategic business development and promotional initiatives as needed
  • Assist lawyers in writing and implementing individual/group/office strategic plans and managing budgets upon request
  • In coordination with the PR/communications team, evaluate sponsorships and opportunities to participate in various directories. Negotiate agreements and manage participation in sponsorships and directories in order to ensure that the firm receives the maximum return on its investment
  • Work with PGLs to plan practice meetings and retreats, and advise practice directors regarding steps needed to achieve group goals
  • Supervise Business Development Coordinators
  • Other responsibilities as they are assigned from time to time 

Education and Experience

  • A. in Marketing, Communications, English or similar field. MBA or JD desirable.
  • Previous experience supervising marketing staff and being accountable for performance and results of a team within own discipline and function
  • 5-7 years’ experience preferred in relevant practice area, implementing BD initiatives preferably in a professional services industry
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects with minimal supervision
  • Proactive self-starter

  • Effective interpersonal and team working skills
  • Experience working independently as well as within cross-functional teams in a collaborative, professional environment
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with attorneys, professional level staff and peers

  • An ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure
  • Flexible and available to work overtime
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office( Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Access), Interaction, Concep Campaigner software and ContactNetwork a plus
  • Excellent research skills, including Internet research experience
  • Must be available to report to work on regularly scheduled days and at the scheduled hour
