Manager, Business Development (Transactional)

Job Description

This position helps drive the client development initiatives of the Transactional Department and its individual practice groups. He/she oversees the execution of a variety of marketing and business development projects including events and sponsorships, thought leadership, content development and marketing, attorney profile raising, contact management, research, competitive intelligence and RFPs, pitches and proposals and ensures efficient and effective delivery of services. In this role, the Manager works closely with members of the Client Development staff and other administrative departments to coordinate efforts and is responsible for supervising day-to-day activities and workflow related to Transactional projects.

Working with the Director of Client Development, the Manager proactively identifies activities that address practice group strategic goals and build market visibility. He/she is responsible for evaluating and elevating existing marketing efforts by incorporating industry best practices, relevant technology and innovative approaches and introducing new initiatives, with a focus on content marketing including targeted events and thought leadership. 

Principal Responsibilities and Duties 

  • Oversees the execution of client development projects and initiatives at varying levels of involvement which may include as a project lead or supervisor.
  • Drives progress and tracks client development project status, activity and follow-up; generates summary reports and recommends improvements.
  • Identifies and assists in the implementation of sponsorships, memberships, events and speaking opportunities that support practice growth, visibility and differentiation and monitors related efforts by competitors.
  • Incorporating leading technologies and best industry practices, informs content marketing, external marketing campaigns, digital and social media efforts.
  • Develops and prepares submissions to select legal directories, awards and rankings and pursues other profile raising opportunities.
  • Manages the development of RFP responses, presentations and marketing collateral and in so doing, leverages and grows experience management assets and materials.
  • Provides guidance, supervision, feedback, professional development and mentoring to more junior members of the team. Oversees workflow to ensure productivity, quality and efficiency.
  • Sees and deploys collaboration with colleagues and other departments as a critical factor in service excellence.
  • Contributes to the firm’s Service Excellence initiative to consistently improve its image internally and externally. Displays professionalism, quality service and a “can do” attitude to internal members/departments of the firm as well as external clients and vendors via electronic and print correspondence, over the telephone and in-person.
  • Travels on occasion to firm offices or key client event locations.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned. 

Required Skills

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong independent thinking and execution, and mature professional judgment.
  • Supervisory skills to manage, coach and develop professional staff as direct and indirect reports.
  • Strong multitasking and project management skills and demonstrated capabilities to manage multiple deadlines and changing project criteria.
  • Familiarity with current and emerging technology, tools and trends for professional services marketing.
  • Demonstrable analytic skills, organizational skills, initiative and vision.
  • Superior oral and written communications skills, including professional presentation abilities, with demonstrated excellence in grammar and proofreading.
  • Extensive working knowledge Microsoft Suite software. 

Education

  • BA/BS required. Advanced degree preferred.

Experience

  • Seven to ten years’ experience, preferably in legal or professional services environment.
  • Two or more years’ supervisory/management experience.
