IP Litigation Paralegal-ITC
Reports to: Office Administrator
Summary
Under the supervision of lawyers from the IP/Litigation Department, the IP Litigation Paralegal will provide support for all levels of the litigation process. The paralegal will operate as part of a team comprised of lawyers and staff with the goal to provide high level service to both internal and external clients.
Responsibilities
- Extensive knowledge of the ECF/PACER, PTAB and PAIR systems.
- Review and manage docket for deadlines, must have the ability to prioritize and re-prioritize tasks on an ongoing, immediate basis, understand docket and deadlines and action needed on each file; inform working attorney of deadlines; preparation of weekly docket reports.
- Drafting litigation pleadings, i.e. Motions, Notices, Discovery, and Proposed Orders
- Extensive knowledge of the state, federal and ITC litigation process.
- Experience filing documents with the PACER and PTAB, including IPR’s and CBM’s.
- Experience with all facets of documents productions, including confidentiality, deliverables, service and drafting privilege logs.
- Experience with all facets of depositions, including preparing exhibits, digesting transcripts and preparing errata sheets.
- Review files and preparation of documents for litigation/IPR procedures.
- Experience at trial in State and Federal Courts plus in the ITC, with possible travel.
- Liaise with clients, experts, and opposing counsel.
- Experience with appellate level litigations, including preparing appendices and Federal Circuit filings.
- Willing and able to step right into a leading paralegal role in active state, Federal and ITC litigations.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Supervision
- Very limited; may supervise a paralegal clerk.
Knowledge
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ work experience in a law firm environment, or related professional experience.
- Domestic and basic foreign intellectual property experience preferred.
- Should have a basic understanding of foreign patent prosecution procedures.
- Knowledge of filing requirements for convention (non-PCT) applications.
- Must have knowledge of USPTO rules and procedures.
- Extensive knowledge and skills in utilizing the Internet, Adobe Acrobat, U.S. Patent Office Electronic Filing System, EPCT; experience with legal research tools preferred.
- Previous experience with CPI (Computer Packages Inc.) , or other docketing software systems.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including MSWord, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Ability to learn and use databases.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals.
- Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints.
- Ability to proofread materials for contextual, grammatical, typographical or spelling errors.
- Must have strong organizational, decision-making skills and problem solving skills.
- Must be reliable and a self-starter.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer, photocopiers, and fax machines.
Fiscal Responsibility
- Routinely review and disburse vendor invoices.
- No budgeting nor auditing responses.
Contact
- Extensive daily contacts with lawyers, staff and colleagues.
- Assist lawyers in contacts with opposing counsel, government agencies and county clerks.
- Contact with outside vendors.
- Assist lawyers in contact with clients.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift boxes of files weighing approximately 15 pounds.
- Must be able to routinely lift and carry file folders weighing up to 5-10 pounds.
- Must be able to spend long periods of time working at computer workstation.
- Must be able to lift, squat, kneel and bend.
Working Conditions
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
- Position is full-time and requires a five-day workweek and standard hours as outlined in the firm policy manual. Work frequently requires more than the regularly scheduled hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Must be available to work overtime, including weekend hours, when necessary to meet established deadlines or stay current with occasional peaks in workload. Must be willing to change regular work schedule to meet the needs of the Firm.
- Must be able to perform essential duties of the position with time constraints and frequent interruptions.
- Ability to work well in high pressure environments.
- Position may require some travel including weekend and week-long travel.
