Human Resources Manager

Reports to: Director of Administration 

The Human Resources Manager works directly with the Director of Administration to promote a “client service” environment in support of the attorneys.  He/she is responsible for the administration of Firm policies, practices and procedures, the collaboration of all support services, the direct supervision of secretarial services and reception, and the recruitment, selection and evaluation of all staff personnel.  This position plays a lead role in fostering strong relationships between attorneys and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Promote effective and maximum utilization of administrative staff within a positive and respectful work environment. Provide leadership and direction.
  • Maintains positive employee relations by working and communicating collaboratively with attorneys and staff.
  • Creates an efficient and effective working environment for attorneys by anticipating the needs and planning for the delivery of services and coordinating with all departments, including managing and monitoring administrative assistant assignments.
  • In partnership with the Director of Administration, approves all staffing decisions including hiring and terminations, makes recommendations for salary increases, and determines appropriate salary levels for support staff.
  • Human Resources responsibilities include recruitment, hiring, on-boarding, training, counseling, discipline, performance appraisals, conflict resolution, compensation, recordkeeping and staff development.
  • Identify career development opportunities for succession planning; coordinate and facilitate training programs.
  • Coordinates special functions and events for attorneys and support staff.
  • Recommends, implements and enforces Firm policies and procedures. Participates in peer group meetings with other DC law firms; suggests and adopts best practices.  Develops policies and procedures specific to the DC office including but not limited to off hours support and weather related closings.
  • Manages the emergency preparedness program for the office including periodic drills in coordination with the building, and CPR and AED training for responders.
  • Benefits orientation, administration and recordkeeping in compliance with the law and Firm policy for attorneys and staff.
  • HRIS data entry and reporting.
  • Responsibilities extend to both day-to-day business issues and longer term planning and strategic matters.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5 years experience in human resources or office management in a professional services environment.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Ability to deliver clear, concise and appropriate messages to a variety of audiences.  Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effective leadership, team building and management skills. Strong conflict resolution skills and the ability to facilitate change.
  • Ability to analyze problems, evaluate alternatives and propose and implement solutions. Demonstrated use of initiative and ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Knowledge of labor and employment laws.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • HRIS administration.
