Business Development Analyst – Litigation

Reports to: Sr. Manager of BD – Litigation 

Job Description

Support the Business Development Managers, Specialists and other team members on a variety of long-term strategic projects, as well as in the execution of short-term business development- and marketing-related responsibilities, with the unifying goal of generating new business opportunities. Collectively, these include assisting with generation of leads by analyzing extant and prospective clients, and researching relevant industry or geographic segments; helping attorneys realize these leads by assisting with drafting of pitch materials and preparing targeted pre-meeting research; and working with other Business Development staff on maintaining and strategically expanding the profile of the Litigation Department and its constituent attorneys by maintaining up-to-date external marketing collateral, including attorney biographies and the website, and the pitch files and matter databases that support them, and using this collateral to draft directory submissions (e.g, Chambers, Legal 500) and other award nominations.

Work with Business Development team, the practice leaders, and individual attorneys to coordinate all phases of a variety of projects, including development of initial strategy, monitoring progress against goals, and analyzing return on investment. Significant focus on developing and organizing practice area and matter data, and other client and company information, for the purpose of executing all responsibilities of the group. 

Primary Responsibilities and/or Essential Functions

  • Contribute to development of overall Business Development strategy, processes, and work product in support of the Firm, Litigation practices, and individual attorney initiatives.
  • Draft tailored pitch materials and other marketing collateral, such as brochures and event invitations, and oversee document production as required.
  • Develop and organize practice area and matter data and descriptions and other client information.
  • Utilize major external data analysis tools (e.g., CapitalIQ, PACER, Westlaw and LEXIS, Bloomberg Law, etc.) to execute and complete research assignments and generate leads, while utilizing internal databases and libraries to track pitch and other BD-related activity, update client-matter (case) descriptions and developments, and update the Firm’s client-relationship management (CRM) system.
  • Assist with drafting responses to requests for proposals (RFPs) and other client information requests, as needed.
  • Research prospective and current clients, industries, and competitive landscape as required.
  • Interface with marketing database team to improve and updated contact lists and newsletter distribution lists, in addition to overall marketing mailings process.
  • Work with BD staff and attorneys to prepare newsletters and other client alerts for distribution through the Firm and, with the PR/Communications team, to a variety of social media channels.
  • Working with attorneys, draft client-matter descriptions for use in pitches, on the website, and in attorney biographies, among other collateral materials.
  • Execute strategic goals for Business Development team, practice areas, and individual attorneys.
  • Plan and coordinate Firm-sponsored and third-party events, including developing invitations and invitee lists, arranging internal logistics, drafting and producing hard-copy collateral and presentations, working with internal A/V and IT staff to arrange webinar access, and procuring CLE accreditation.
  • Assist with cross-practice business development initiatives as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a major law firm; experience supporting litigation practices is preferred.
  • Strong writing, editing, analytical and researching skills; ability to synthesize data and accurately capture it in a narrative.
  • Experience utilizing legal and other third-party databases (e.g. Pacer, Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, Bloomberg, Thomson, Monitor Suite, etc.) preferred.
  • Ability to multitask and work independently in a fast-paced and high pressure environment; must possess a very strong attention to detail and a professional demeanor.
  • Willingness to work outside normal business hours and on weekends as required.
  • Self-motivated, with excellent time management skills, project management skills and sound judgment required.
  • Excellent computer skills, with Word, PowerPoint and Excel are required.
  • Positive attitude and ability to motivate clients and colleagues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Education/Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
