Summary

The Bankruptcy Paralegal works effectively and collaboratively to provide organizational and substantive support to attorneys of the Bankruptcy Department.

Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned cases and their related tasks and projects.
  • Prepare various pleadings, including Pro Hac Vice, notices of hearing, hearing agendas, and certificates of no objection.
  • Assist with preparation of Chapter 11 petitions, schedules and SOFAs, largest unsecured creditor lists, and first day motions and applications.
  • Verify legal authority in briefs and memos and ensured accuracy of Bluebook citation format.
  • Review Local and Federal Bankruptcy Rules, as well as administrative orders, to ensure that filings were in proper form.
  • Electronically file documents with Bankruptcy and District Courts and served documents according to case management orders.
  • Review billable hours of attorneys and staff and prepare monthly fee statements and invoices for all cases.
  • Prepare interim and final applications for compensation and reimbursement of expenses.
  • Assemble first day, hearing, and case law binders.
  • Work directly with attorneys and clients to ensure quality and efficiency of case project management.
  • Handle organization and administration of high volume of electronic and hard copy case files, paying strict attention to detail.
  • Edit documents that were filed with the Court, ensuring accuracy of information.
  • Monitor docket reports daily on PACER, communicating status of cases to attorneys.
  • Retrieve pleadings and other documents from case dockets using PACER.
  • Conduct research, locating and retrieving precedent documents.
  • Prepare letters to judges, clients, vendors, and other counsel.
  • Monitor court docket sheets for assigned cases and take ownership of case calendars.
  • Prepare drafts of notices, motions, fee applications and proofs of claims.
  • Remain current in industry trends in Bankruptcy/Restructuring and the legal profession.
  • Ensure expertise in technology relevant to the position; proactively use most current technology to further teamwork, client service, and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5-7 years of knowledge of Bankruptcy Court procedures and practices.
  • Familiarity with chapter 11 reorganization process and basic documents such as, SoFAs, fee applications, disclosure statements, and plans of reorganization.
  • Prior working experience in the bankruptcy group of a law firm representing debtors and creditors in complex chapter 11.
  • Experience with e-filing within the Federal Courts, specifically with both the U.S. Bankruptcy and the U.S District Courts.
  • Familiarity with CM/ECF and PACER filing system.
  • Ability to conduct research using various research tools, including the Internet, Westlaw, and Courtlink.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong sense of accountability, taking ownership over projects and responsibilities and resolving issues proactively.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to assess information, anticipate issues and outcomes, and make effective decisions.
  • Ability to manage multiple requests, assess priorities, and achieve solutions under deadlines.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent teamwork skills and a strong client service orientation.
  • Flexibility to work overtime as required.
