Summary
The IM Professional Development Manager (the “Manager”) is responsible for managing the integration of the professional development best practices, initiatives, and programming specific to the Investment Management Group (the “Group”) in order to help develop, engage and retain IM Associates and Counsel (“IM Associates”). This is an excellent opportunity to be an integral member of a dynamic law practice and collaborate with a progressive professional development team.
The position can be based in New York, New York or Roseland, New Jersey, and will include remote work days. The role will require travel to other offices on an as needed basis.
This position will sit in the New York, NY or Roseland, NJ offices and currently offers a hybrid remote work opportunity.
Essential Job Requirements
- Understanding the nuances of the various practice areas within the overall Investment Management Group and the distinct professional development needs of the IM Associates in those practice areas;
- Working closely with lawyers in the Group to facilitate the Group’s consistent use of the firm’s work assignment system so that the Group is allocating work in ways that optimize attorney utilization, and support and enhance integration, engagement, inclusion and professional development;
- Helping IM Associates access the intended benefits of firm-wide mentorship and sponsorship programs and any Group specific initiatives that supplement firm-wide efforts;
- Organizing and ensuring the timely delivery of IM-specific training to IM Associates and collaborating with PD and Recruiting to provide Summer Associates and junior corporate attorneys with opportunities to learn about the IM Practice and work with the Group;
- Working closely with the Group, Recruiting and PD on all aspects of new attorney onboarding and orientation for new IM Associates and meeting with new IM Associates during orientation;
- Supporting the Partners in their collaborations with the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and helping to ensure that the Group’s commitment to DEI meets the goals laid out in the Group’s Diversity & Inclusion Action Plan;
- Conducting regular 1:1 check-ins with IM Associates to ascertain their evolving career goals, needs and interests and working closely with the Partners, Director, PD Team, and other business functions to help IM Associates achieve their goals and access opportunities that will facilitate their engagement and professional growth;
- Working with the Partners to determine which IM Associates are best suited for various firm wide programs, committees, initiatives and opportunities (g.:Sponsorship Program);
- Collaborating with the Partners and PD Team on various aspects of the semi-annual attorney performance review and real-time feedback processes including scheduling and readying materials for performance roundtables, following up on action items arising from the roundtables, and ensuring the timely delivery of feedback to IM Associates;
- Encouraging IM Associates to participate in Group specific and firm wide initiatives intended to facilitate their immersion in the practice, engagement, and professional development;
- Reviewing various practice group and firm-wide reports which indicate associate and counsel engagement, productivity and growth (g.:monthly hours reports), and provide information to the IM Group Administrator to inform work assignments;
- Producing reports that help the Partners understand how the Practice is doing in terms of meeting its professional development objectives for the Group;
- Staying abreast of firm wide professional development programming, messaging, initiatives and opportunities;
- Knowing and adhering to Firm policies and procedures, with a particular emphasis on understanding the policies that relate to the attorney career development function;
- Maintaining and organizing program and project documentation;
- Seeking timely solutions to work conflicts and priorities; and
- Keeping track of open items and initiating timely follow-up.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in an administrative role or as a data analyst/specialist;
- 4-year college degree;
- Experience in a Professional Development or HR function preferred;
- Prior legal practice or experience in a law firm support function highly preferred;
- Knowledge of the investment management industry helpful;
- Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality;
- Results-oriented;
- Attention to detail;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Excellent emotional intelligence skills;
- Ability to effectively manage time and multiple tight deadlines;
- Experience in data management (;spreadsheets, databases);
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint);
- Demonstrated strongproject management skills;
- Must display enthusiasm, patience, flexibility, a positive and upbeat attitude, and perceive challenges as client service opportunities;
- Must be able to represent oneself professionally as a representative of the firm in an array of situations, interacting with all levels of the organization and various external resources;
- Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced environment;
- Ability to anticipate issues and questions and take initiative.
