Summary
The Legal Learning and Development Manager -U.S. will work across the Firm’s California, New York and Washington, DC offices, and in close collaboration with the Firm’s offices outside of the United States, to ensure that attorneys are offered proper training and development processes. The Manager will focus on solutions to drive high performance, keep attorney skills aligned with professional development and the business needs of the firm to retain talent.
The Manager will be the overall architect for associate training in the firm’s US offices, focusing on design, strategy, direction and content, curricula and programmatic creation. While the Manager may at times facilitate/deliver content, it is not intended that this role be primarily a training role but rather focused on design, strategy, direction and content, curricula and programmatic creation.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the Director of Learning and Development, the global L&D function and Talent team to gain an in-depth understanding of the developmental needs of attorneys at various levels of seniority and in particular practice areas to develop tailored training programs, curricula and development initiatives accordingly.
- Oversee Legal L&D team members in NY and DC offices.
- Build on existing programs, content and leverage existing technology while also continuing to refresh and monitor the Cleary Core Skills curriculum (required professional skills training for associates) and New Associate Orientation program.
- Oversee identification, assessment, design, implementation and process management/process improvement of training/development curricula/content and programs, systems (including technology systems) and delivery methods, talent management initiatives.
- Design and implement training programs across the US offices to eliminate redundancies and address associate developmental needs.
- Design, maintain and distribute information on learning initiatives to raise awareness and enthusiasm for programs within the Firm.
- Screen and retain outside consultants and vendors to assist in the development and delivery of certain professional and financial skills training courses.
- Prepare and analyze training satisfaction surveys for continued enhancements.
- Maintain an expertise in CLE Rules (including but not limited to New York rules) and ensure programs are eligible for CLE credit.
- Support special projects as needed related to attorney training and talent development.
Requirements
- 7 + years of training, facilitation and instructional design experience within a law firm or other professional services environment
- Bachelor’s degree required; Juris Doctor or Master’s degree in related field preferred
- Proactive leader and team player capable of self-management, able to plan ahead and push projects forward
- Experience managing people and processes
- Excellent client service and organizational skills, and strong attention to detail
- Polished and effective written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated experience working across all levels of an organization
- Able to build strong relationships with key internal stakeholders and external trainers, coaches and consultants
- Comfort facilitating and/or presenting to a range of audiences and levels of seniority
- Understanding of New York CLE requirements and rules preferred
