Manager, Lateral Recruiting

Summary

The Manager of Lateral Recruiting reports to the Director of Legal Recruiting and is responsible for overseeing the firm’s lateral associate, international associate, judicial clerk, legal assistant and extern recruitment. Though based in New York, this is a firmwide position and the Manager will work collaboratively with colleagues in various departments, practices and locations to ensure consistency across offices. The Manager is expected to think innovatively and strategically about lateral recruiting initiatives and how to help the firm achieve its recruiting goals. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee firmwide lateral associate recruiting efforts in close collaboration with Practice Group Leaders
  • Strengthen relationships with headhunters, negotiate fee proposals and manage the lateral associate recruiting budget
  • Draft and post job descriptions for each new search and maintain database of prior job descriptions
  • Coordinate the interview process, including contacting candidates, liaising with recruiters, scheduling interviews, coordinating travel, processing reimbursements, etc.
  • Maintain accurate records of candidate pool and application documents in accordance with firm policy
  • Keep partners and other key stakeholders up to date on candidate status and next steps
  • Follow up with interviewers as necessary to complete candidate files for offer consideration
  • Facilitate offer decision process and draft offer letters
  • Work closely with the firm’s Risk Management Attorney to ensure conflicts checks are completed in a timely manner
  • Liaise with all relevant departments to achieve seamless onboarding and integration of new hires, including human resources, office services, technology and training, payroll, work authorization/visa acquisition (if applicable), etc.
  • Stay abreast of changes in the industry and gather market intelligence
  • Maintain and analyze the firm’s historical recruiting statistics; identify trends in data and think strategically to inform future recruiting
  • Manage the Legal Assistant, International Attorney, Judicial Clerk and 3L extern recruitment and onboarding processes 

Miscellaneous

  • Assist the summer associate recruiting team with on-campus recruiting in July and August as needed
  • Collaborate with Professional Development, Diversity & Inclusion and global HR teams on a range of programs and responsibilities that span the Legal Talent function
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Strong ability to collaborate and engage with candidates, lawyers and business services professionals
  • Must be a creative problem solver and possess a high level of self-confidence, maturity and excellent judgement
  • Strong ability to maintain highly confidential and sensitive information
  • High energy with a great deal of enthusiasm and ability to stay calm under pressure
  • Exceptionally strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize a number of responsibilities, while maintaining accuracy
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills – including the ability to tailor the communication style to a specific audience
  • Demonstrates a strong customer service orientation 

Education & Experience

  • A minimum of five years of prior attorney recruiting experience at a law firm preferred
  • A bachelor’s degree is required, and a JD is a plus
  • Knowledge of the legal market and current industry is important, as is a willingness to learn
  • Must be technically proficient in a wide variety of software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Workday, viRecruit, etc.) 

Physical Activity/Other Miscellaneous

  • Must be willing to work extended hours and travel, including some weekends
