Law Firm Announces Work-From-Anywhere ProgramFebruary 3, 2014
Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan associates will have the option of working from any location in the world as a result of a new initiative announced by the firm.
Firm chairman John Quinn has circulated a memo informing associates that they could choose to work from anywhere in the world for one week. The program, which lacks an official name, is open only to associates or counsel who billed at least 2,000 hours last year (partners may or may not go, depending on what locations are chosen). The firm will pay up to $2,000 for each associate’s travel expenses with the caveat being that associates must go somewhere with 24/7 connectivity.
“Maybe you will throw down a power strip in a beach cafe in India,” Quinn wrote in his memo. “Maybe a hostel in a village in the mountains of Columbia. Or Freak Street in Kathmandu?”
Lest attorneys get the wrong idea, the point of this program is to work. ”You must be available at all the hours you would be available if you were in your home office,” said Quinn in the memo. “You are expected to continue working and be available just as you would if you were home. If your work assignments are such that you really can’t do them remotely, then wait until next year.” Quinn also admonishes interested associates not to travel during the week, telling them to “do your traveling on weekends.”
